Dear all,
Welcome.
Election Manifestos/Court directives: The Supreme Court had given ruling that the election manifestos of political parties might contain distribution of free laptops, mixer grinders, table fans, gold plates etc that do not come under definition of Corruption in Public representative Act, yet people do get affected by them. These affect the election process. The court had given directions to the Election Commission that it should issue directions in this regard for prevention of such declarations so that election process is free and fair. The Court had also stated EC that it should be implemented immediately. it had also stressed upon formation of rules in regard to the regularisation of various political parties.
The Apex Court had given this verdict upon hearing petition of Subramanian Balaji regarding DMK & AIADMK manifestos for distribution of free gifts as corrupt election practices. The free gift distribution after coming into power cannot be said to be corrupt practice under Public Representative Act 123. But it could not be denied that these affect the people.
As per Article 324, Election Commission could issue directions for free ad fair Elections. The distribution of free gifts could be put under separate head in those directions. EC could act after the election dates are announced whereas election manifestos are made prior to it. As such, it could not prevented and it would be an exception. The Court had also stated about it's limited intervention in such matters. It could do so only after it is declared illegal.
Egypt: Yesterday, Egypt's Justice dept. had issued arrest orders for Muslim brotherhood movement's top leaders, Mohammed Babdi and Khairat al shaitar. He is advisor of Brotherhood. During past year, he had been most favoured person but due to old cases, he had been out of race for Presidency post. The Brotherhood leaders are kept along with Ex-President, Hosni Mubarak. After Freedom and Justice party's head and Chairman of House were arrested after removal of Mohammed Mursi. They are kept at Cairo's outskirts prison where Hosni Mubarak is kept. They are charged of spreading violence. It is to note that Chief Justice, Adli Mansoor, had been made interim President.
Sri Lanka Elections: After extermination of LTTE, Jaffna subcontinent is under the control of Sri Lankan Army. After 1987 Peace agreement with India, it had passed 13th amendment for providing autonomy to regional councils. India is opposing return of those rights being granted prior to the elections. The govt. Information dept. Official had announced elections to be held during September 21 or 28.
Sri Lankan Special Task Force's 12 police personnel had been arrested for charges regarding killing of five Tamilian students citing them as LTTE terrorists. It had appeared prominently during 2006. The Police personnel claimed that they were about to throw grenades on them at Trinchomoli.
China: China and Pakistan had signed eight agreements during the visit of Indian Defence minister. It includes formation of a 200 kms long tunnel in PoK worth 1800 crore dollars. The aim of it is stated to be strengthening bilateral relations amongst themselves but it poses threat to India strategically. Pak PM had signed these agreements. The tunnel would link Gwader sea port with North-West China's Kashghar. China has strategic benefits accrued with it. It had taken sea port under it's control. It would make it's presence up to Hormuz straits in Arabian sea. The World's one-third of oil is being transported through it.
As per specialists, it would aid development of Xixiang. Also, it would open a new route for energy imports.
